Class Concept

This class provides a full range of psychological and educational diagnostic and intervention services for children or adults. Employee provides counseling, psychotherapy, consultation, and/or behavior management to individuals/groups in order to treat or address psychological adjustment and/or behavioral issues. Employee administers, interprets, evaluates, and assesses individuals' tests of mental abilities, aptitudes, and/or personality characteristics and motivations. Employee observes individuals and groups in an effort to assess, evaluate, and predict behaviors. Employee diagnoses, treats, and manages mental and/or psychological disorders or disabilities, substance abuse, and disorders of habit or conduct. Diagnostic responsibilities may include evaluation for development, intelligence, learning, behavior, and personality disorders. Employee consults with psychologists, physicians, and other professionals regarding available treatment options. Employee may coordinate or supervise small programs or subunits, or lead paraprofessionals such as behavioral programming specialists. Employee may provide information to health care professionals and to court officials in order to assist in legal decision-making.

Recruitment Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Basic knowledge of the NC Psychology Practice Act and amendments
  • Working knowledge of the assessment of personal characteristics that includes intelligence, personality, abilities, interests, aptitudes, and neuropsychological functioning
  • Working knowledge of the NC Psychology Board's administrative rules and NC Juvenile Code and HIPPA
  • Working knowledge of the Protection of the Abused, Neglected, or Exploited Disabled Adult Act; and the American Psychological Association and other applicable codes of ethics
  • Thorough knowledge and application of psychological principles, theories, methods, procedures, thorough knowledge of application, and evaluation of psychological testing
  • Considerable knowledge of the psychological and neuropsychological aspects of physical illness, accident, injury, or disability
  • Ability to conduct and to apply psycho-educational evaluation, therapy, remediation, and consultation and ability to counsel, conduct psychotherapy and behavior analyses
  • Ability to treat mental/emotional, intellectual disabilities, and substance abuse
  • Ability to formulate and create patient behavioral programming in accordance with facility and state policies and procedures
  • Ability to interpret diagnostic tests and findings, abbility to prepare comprehensive reports, ability to coordinate and supervise work and ability to relate appropriately to client and staff members

Minimum Education and Experience

Eligibility for licensure in North Carolina under the provisions of the NC Psychology Practice Act (G.S. 90270).
