This class performs a variety of technical and specialized work in veterinary processes and procedures. Work is typically performed in a veterinarian clinic, veterinarian hospital, research laboratory, zoological park, wildlife rehab clinic and/or veterinary teaching hospital. Performs work activities independently related to the health management of animals such as diagnostic procedures, medical treatments, preparing operating rooms for surgery, and assisting during surgeries including anesthetizing animals. May supervise veterinary students, interns, researchers, and/or others in the performance of veterinary techniques and procedures. Work is performed under the general supervision of a veterinarian.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Basic knowledge of patient monitoring equipment
Basic knowledge of Federal and State regulations and National Institutes of Health guidelines
Intermediate knowledge of animal anatomy, physiology, diseases, treatments, and restraint techniques
Intermediate knowledge of signs of common diseases of animals
Intermediate knowledge of medications and surgical instruments
Intermediate knowledge of aseptic techniques
Ability to manage emergency situations efficiently and effectively by determining priorities in a highly active and stressful environment
Ability to help move, lift, and restrain large animals
Ability to administer medication and injections to animals and conduct specialized treatments under veterinary supervision
Minimum Education and Experience
Completion of post-high school coursework in the care and treatment of animals that conforms to the standards required for accreditation by the American Veterinary Medical Association OR holds a degree in veterinary medicine from a college of veterinary medicine recognized by the Board for licensure of veterinarians.
Necessary Special Requirements
Registered with the Board as a veterinary technician.
