This is professional work that may involve research, design, development, preservation and/or maintenance of a curatorial program for a North Carolina science museum, history museum, art museum, zoological park, or other state park and/or historic site. Employees provide support, or may be responsible for, programs in natural science, history, art history, or educational methodology/programming. Employees may oversee or assist in the acquisition and interpretation of artifacts, conduct independent research, maintain records of provenance, condition and status of artifacts, and legal or tax documents. Employees may develop or assist with delivery of exhibits, field trips, special events, lectures and publication of program activities, and brochures and/or educational materials, or may serve as content experts in a specific field. Employees may be responsible for inspection, stabilization, and development of guidelines for conservation of artifacts. Employees may supervise permanent, seasonal, or volunteer staff, manage a docent or school services program; and/or other duties as assigned. Work is performed under the general direction of a program chief, director, curator, or other administrator in a museum, satellite museum, park, or historical site setting.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of museum methods regarding conservation, collection, design, exhibition and interpretation and reference sources as required.
Ability to plan, design and prepare exhibits; conduct workshops, or lead field trips, and may be required to write narrative scripts, brochures and other materials.
Ability to conduct and document research, present information effectively and speak before community groups, educational institutions, and individuals.
Ability to work with minimal supervision.
Ability to effectively oversee work activities and provide direction to assigned staff, including volunteers if functions in supervisory and/or lead worker role.
Ability to use power tools or scientific equipment if required for position.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with others.
Minimum Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree in Art History, Biology, Botany, Conservation, Education, History or Zoology from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of museum or related work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
