This is professional and/or specialized work that involves research, design, development, preservation and/or maintenance of curatorial programs and exhibits of a North Carolina science museum, history museum, art museum, zoological park or other state park and/or historic site. Employees are generally responsible for natural science, history, art history, and/or educational programming. Employees may oversee or assist in the acquisition and interpretation of artifacts, conduct research, maintain records of provenance, condition and status of artifacts, taxonomic identification, and legal or tax documents. Employees may develop or assist with exhibits, special events and publication of program activities and brochures, and may serve as content experts. Employees may be responsible for inspection, stabilization, and development of guidelines for conservation of artifacts and natural habitats. The employee may supervise or direct activities of lower level curators, seasonal and/or volunteer staff, and may perform other duties as assigned. Work is performed under the direction of a program chief, director, or other administrator in a museum, satellite museum, park or historical site setting.
Recruitment Requirements
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of museum methods regarding conservation, collection, design, exhibition and interpretation and reference sources as required.
Ability to plan and design exhibits; write or edit manuscripts, narrative scripts, brochures and other materials.
Ability to conduct and document research, present information effectively and speak before community groups, educational institutions, and individuals.
Ability to work with minimal supervision.
Ability to effectively oversee work activities and provide training or management direction to assigned staff, including volunteers and contractors.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with others.
Minimum Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree in Art History, Biology, Botany, Conservation, Education, History or Zoology from an appropriately accredited institution and four years of museum or related work, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
