Division Of Aquariums Director

Class Concept

This is managerial work in directing the state aquariums and facilities that promotes the state's aquatic environments. Responsible for the development and implementation of the division's mission and goals which governs the short- and long-term strategic planning for the aquariums. Ensure Aquariums comply with all required Association of Aquariums and Zoos (AZA) Accreditation, state, and federal laws, regulations, policies and procedures. Manage division fiscal operations, direct division policy and standards, set priorities in areas of facility construction and renovation, education, animal husbandry, and community outreach. Employee is reviewed through reports and conferences with department heads, stakeholders, and community officials.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of the required administrative systems to support program operations.
  • Considerable knowledge of exhibit development methods, aquatic life support systems, and facility management systems.
  • Thorough knowledge of the goals, trends, and industry standards of public aquariums and of the principles of marine ecology, marine biology, and/or science education.
  • Ability to conduct strategical planning and goal setting objectives.
  • Ability to direct staff in the application of strategies and plans to meet the division's objectives.
  • Ability to plan and manage a variety of programs, activities and exhibits to appeal to a diversified population.
  • Ability to manage a diverse staff.

Minimum Education and Experience

Master's degree in marine science, biology, zoology, science education, or a related field from an appropriately accredited institution and six years of management and administrative/supervisory experience at an aquarium, museum, zoo, or related facility; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
