Class Concept

This is entry level inspection work as a team member of a highway structure management inspection team in a large geographical area.

Positions conduct inspections of structures including bridges, culverts, large pipes, tunnels and overhead structural walkways to detect evidence of deterioration and/or damage due to natural or accidental causes. Positions take precise measurements of bridges and other structures to detect any movement, distortion of section loss to structural members and documents deficiencies; writes detailed structure inspection reports documenting all findings necessary for use in an asset management program which includes determining the structural integrity and safety of state highway structures. The work of this class is performed under the technical supervision of a Team Leader and work is reviewed in progress and upon completion for accuracy of inspections and adherence to safety procedures. Work may include performing other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Working knowledge of applicable testing equipment, of Federal and State inspection principles, techniques, procedures and equipment, and of bridge design types.
• Working knowledge of bridge construction, maintenance and material characteristics.
• Ability to interpret plans and specifications, to understand and follow written and verbal instructions, and to apply basic mathematics to compute areas and volumes.
• Ability to keep accurate notes and records, to make detailed sketches, to make accurate observations and complete standard forms and reports, and the physical ability to climb ladders, scaffolds, access equipment and bridge structures.

Minimum Education and Experience

Associate's degree in Civil Engineering Technology from an appropriately accredited institution; or High school or General Education Development (GED) diploma and two (2) years of progressive experience in the inspection, construction, design or maintenance of major steel or concrete bridges or other structures; or an equivalent combination of training and directly related experience.
