Class Concept

Work in this class involves the performance of semi-skilled duties in the maintenance, alteration, and repair of buildings or in fabricating and repairing a variety of wooden articles and equipment, and may include the advanced phase of on-the-job training. Assignments are received from a journeyman carpenter or foreman, and an employee in this class will be guided in the principles and techniques until he masters the work involved. The degree of supervision received will vary depending upon the variety of assignments and the person's aptitude and ability to acquire the skills required. Upon satisfactory completion of the various assignments, an employee will be expected to qualify for journeyman level assignments. Work will be reviewed by a carpenter or foreman to determine that the employee understands the basic principles and techniques as well as for the satisfactory completion of assignments.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Basic knowledge of the techniques and methods involved in performing carpentry work.
  • Basic skill in the performance of duties relating to the carpentry trade.
  • Ability to use and operate the various tools, machines, and instruments used in the fabrication and repair of a variety of wooden articles and equipment.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Physical strength sufficient to work at heavy manual labor for considerable periods of time.

Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma or a sufficient year-for-year combination of education and experience in the construction or remodeling of wooden structures or in furniture repair or construction; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
