Work in this class involves the performance of journeyman level carpentry work in the construction, maintenance, alteration, and repair of buildings, or in fabricating and repairing a variety of wooden articles and equipment. Work assignments are received from the foreman or other supervisor and are usually accompanied by sketches, specifications, or oral instructions; however, an employee in this class is required to perform work in accordance with established trade practices. New or unusual work assignments are accompanied by detailed drawings or oral instructions, and any irregular or difficult work problems are resolved through discussion with the foreman. Work is reviewed by a superior through inspection of completed work for quality and compliance with work orders.
Recruitment Requirements
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Working knowledge of the standard practices and methods of the carpentry trade.
Working knowledge of tools and materials used in repairing and constructing wooden articles.
Skill in the use of carpenters' hand tools and woodworking machines.
Ability to read and work from blueprints, drawings, or sketches.
Ability to make accurate arithmetical calculations.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Physical strength sufficient to perform heavy tasks for considerable periods of time.
Minimum Education and Experience
High school or General Educational Development diploma and two years of experience in the construction or remodeling of wooden structures or in furniture repair or construction; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
