Class Concept

This class is responsible for the planning and supervision of construction, installation, maintenance, and repair of primary and/or secondary electrical systems, equipment, and fixtures. Positions occupied by higher skilled and seasoned employees can be responsible for high voltage electrical distribution systems. Work assignments result from discussions or written instructions from a superior and are in the terms of objectives to be accomplished. Blueprints may accompany large installation jobs; however, employee is expected to plan, layout, draw complementary sketches, supervise, and carry work to its completion. Work is reviewed upon completion for adherence to established trade practices and safety standards and is further evaluated on the basis of continued and efficient operation of repaired, systems and installations.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Considerable knowledge of the standard practices, materials, and processes of secondary electrical trade.
• Considerable knowledge of the design, installation, and maintenance of electrical instruments, apparatus, and equipment.
• Skill in the use and care of tools of the trade.
• Ability to plan and lay out work and to develop designs from rough sketches and oral instructions.
• Ability to interpret and work from sketches, blueprints, wiring diagrams, and oval instructions.
• Ability to plan and supervise the work of others.

Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three years of journey level electrical experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Based on the nature of work performed, may require appropriate licensure by the governing board or commission.
