Class Concept

Positions in this class provide programmatic oversight and operational management for the fleet of construction and maintenance equipment assigned to field units statewide. Positions serve as the central point of contact for field units and other agencies as it relates to daily management of fleet. Work involves the management of all issues concerning acquisition, modification, repair, replacement, warranty, and surplus of equipment and parts. Positions oversee equipment facilities-related repairs, fueling infrastructure, equipment depot operations, preventative maintenance schedules, and asset management. Positions supervise Fleet Support Specialists, Machinists, Vehicle Equipment Repair Technicians, and Maintenance Mechanics. Work involves the responsibility for maintaining fleet standardization through control of equipment modifications that effect changes to the characteristics of the equipment. Positions oversee the monitoring of equipment shop loads and maintenance assets, advising whether to make or buy options to equipment, and determine required facilities, training and procurement needs. Positions guide the identification requirements, systems specifications, and implementation of innovative changes to equipment maintenance procedures and/or methods, facilities or equipment.

Recruitment Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Thorough knowledge of operation and maintenance of heavy equipment and its environmental impact.
• Working knowledge of equipment fleet management and productivity monitoring.
• Ability to design and implement innovative support systems for equipment, equipment maintenance facilities, and associated personnel.
• Working knowledge of skilled trades including plumbing, carpentry, welding, and electrical.
• Ability to guide the refurbishment, modification, and repair of construction equipment.
• Ability to perform organizational design and staff training.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in industrial engineering, industrial technology or related degree from an appropriately accredited institution and four (4) years of progressive experience in the management and supervision of a large equipment fleet, automotive or heavy equipment repair shop; or Associates degree in mechanical engineering technology, automotive systems technology, diesel vehicle maintenance, heavy equipment and transport technology, transportation maintenance or related technical degree from an appropriately accredited institution and six (6) years of progressive experience in the management and supervision of a large equipment fleet, automotive or heavy equipment repair shop; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
