Class Concept

This is journey and supervisory work in performing and directing the maintenance and repair of marine electrical systems on ferries, dredges, and related marine vessels. Positions are responsible for the maintenance and repair of electrical and electro-mechanical systems of ferries and dredges operated by the Division of Ferries. Work involves participating in and supervising the installation, maintenance and repair of AC and DC generators, switchboards, distribution panels, lighting and alarm circuits. Maintenance and repairs are performed without technical supervision; however, complex electrical repair problems may be performed under the general supervision of a maintenance supervisor and are reviewed and evaluated through the continued and reliable operation of all electrical systems and their ability to meet U.S. Coast Guard requirements. Positions assist the chief engineer in the preparation and inspection of electrical repairs performed by outside contractors and during annual shipyard overhaul.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Considerable knowledge of marine electrical systems and required maintenance and repair needs.
• Considerable knowledge of the principles, techniques, and practices involved in the installation, maintenance, repair and alteration of marine electrical and electro-mechanical systems.
• Skill in the detection, diagnoses, maintenance and repair of marine electrical systems.
• Ability to communicate orally and in writing complex marine electrical systems problems.

Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and four years of experience in marine electrical and electro-mechanical systems maintenance and repair; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
