Class Concept

Positions work in the repair, maintenance, and replacement of damaged and/or deteriorated metal in steel dredges, ferries, workboats, and barges. Positions supervise shipfitters, pipefitters, and welders in completing work according to U.S. Coast Guard regulations. Work involves the inspection of vessels to determine damage to hull, superstructure, and piping systems. Reviews work while in progress and upon completion for quality. Coordinates work of hull section with that of other sections. Determines needed parts and equipment to affect repairs. Evaluates performance of subordinate employees, and facilitates skill development.

Recruitment Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Working knowledge of Coast Guard regulations for steel vessels.
• Working knowledge of electric arc welding.
• Working knowledge of the techniques utilized in the removal and replacement of structural parts of ships which have deteriorated.
• Working knowledge of bilge, fire, fuel, exhaust, fresh and salt water piping systems.
• Ability to train and supervise subordinate employees.
• Ability to read blueprints and mechanical drawings.
• Ability to establish parts and equipment needs through review of past usage.

Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and four years of experience performing journey level tasks associated with welding, pipefitting and shipfitting of marine steel hull vessels and maintenance of vessel component systems; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Requirements

6G welding certification and certification as welding inspector.
