Class Concept

Work in this class involves the construction of cribbings, floats, shorelines, and dredge discharge lines during dredging operations. Positions assemble and align sections of quick-couplings or flange pipe as needed, coupling sections together by applying manual pressure to locking devices or by placing gaskets between sections and bolting flanges together. Work requires the replacement of anchor and buoy cables, and ensuring come-along, hoists, and other related tools pertaining to connecting shore and float lines are in good operating condition. Positions also support the completion of marine maintenance projects involving the inspection, repair, and installation of channel markers, dolphin clusters, fenders, ferry docks, ramps, and gantries. Work involves considerable exposure to the natural elements and taxing manual work from small boats or pontoons. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Dredge Captain and is reviewed through observation of duties performed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Basic knowledge of the operation and maintenance of dredges, equipment, and related tools.
• Basic knowledge of how to set-up and disengage float and shore lines.
• Skill in coupling and quick-coupling flange pipelines.
• Skill in securing float and shore lines.
• Skill in installing and repairing channel markers, dolphins, fenders, gantries, ferry docks, and ramps.
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time under adverse work conditions.

Minimum Education and Experience

High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma.

Necessary Special Requirements

Transportation Worker Identification Credential Card (TWIC) issued by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA)

May require National Crane Operator certification, U.S. Coast Guard Master of Towing certification, and a Class A CDL.
