Work in this class involves the operation and maintenance of engines and auxiliary equipment on a dredge. Positions are responsible for the operation, maintenance, and inspection of all engines and auxiliary equipment including pumps, generators, wrenches, and other mechanical, electrical, and electromechanical equipment commonly found on pipeline dredges and dredge support equipment and vessels. Positions execute orders received pertaining to the starting, stopping, and power output of equipment during dredging operations, and perform routine emergency repairs during operations. Work includes preventive maintenance and minor repair routines during dredging operations and participation in major overhauls to the dredge while in dock. Positions also support the completion of marine maintenance projects involving the inspection, repair, and installation of channel markers, dolphin clusters, fenders, ferry docks, ramps, and gantries. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Dredge Captain and is evaluated through the safe and efficient performance of all equipment.
Recruitment Requirements
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Considerable knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and repair of marine engines, pumps, generators, and other auxiliary equipment.
Considerable knowledge of precautions to be taken for prevention of fire and the proper maintenance and use of fire-fighting equipment.
Considerable knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions relating to engine room work aboard dredges and support vessels.
Skill in devising and making temporary repairs.
Skill in installing and repairing channel markers, dolphins, fenders, gantries, ferry docks, and ramps.
Minimum Education and Experience
Graduation from High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma with supplemental course work in diesel motor and electrical repairs and three years of experience in the maintenance, overhaul, and operation of industrial or marine engines powered by diesel fuel and gasoline; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Requirements
Transportation Worker Identification Credential Card (TWIC) issued by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA)
May require National Crane Operator certification, U.S. Coast Guard Master of Towing certification, and a Class A CDL.
