Class Concept

Positions in this class oversee dredging operations and ensure completion of various marine maintenance projects. Work involves the operation of a dredge used for maintaining channels and port facilities associated with ferryboat operations. Work requires the determination of depth and width of channel or port facility to be dredged; piloting tugboats, dredge and other vessels to work area; and supervision of a dredge crew in cutting channels, building sand barriers, and excavating sand for port sites. Work includes the responsibility for maintaining the dredge and auxiliary equipment and for securing such equipment during inclement weather. Positions also provide oversight of marine maintenance projects involving the inspection, repair, and installation of channel markers, dolphin clusters, fenders, ferry docks, ramps, and gantries. Work orders are received from the Ferry Operations Manager who reviews work for the effective manner in which assignments are performed and terminated.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Considerable knowledge of the operation and repair of diesel and gas engines, dredge pumps, power generators, and auxiliary equipment.
• Considerable knowledge of the methods and procedures used in dredging operations related to widening channels, making sand barriers and excavating for boat landings and harbors.
• Considerable knowledge of state and federal navigation laws and regulations pertaining to ferry and dredging operations.
• Basic knowledge of crib construction.
• Skill in the operation of ferries, tugboats, dredge tenders, and crane and support barges.
• Skill and ability to guide the installation and repair of channel markers, dolphins, fenders, gantries, ferry docks, and ramps.
• Ability to supervise and instruct subordinate personnel aboard the dredge.
• Ability to prepare reports relating to the operation, repair, and special problems of dredge operations.

Minimum Education and Experience

High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma with two years of progressive experience in dredge operations and related marine maintenance work.

Necessary Special Requirements

Valid U.S. Coast Guard Master's license for 100 ton Inland with Radar Unlimited.

Master of Self-Propelled Vessels of 100 Gross Register Tons.

Valid certificate as Radar Observer issued by an institution approved by the U.S. Coast Guard.

Valid Marine Radio Operator permit issued by the Federal Communications Commission.

Transportation Worker Identification Credential Card (TWIC) issued by the Transportation Security Administration.

May require National Crane Operator certification, U.S. Coast Guard Master of Towing certification, and a Class A CDL.
