Class Concept

Positions perform skilled work in the maintenance, repair and rebuilding of gasoline/diesel engines and other marine equipment. Assignments are received from a Marine Mechanic Supervisor; however, positions in this class independently determine methods or procedures necessary to complete repairs. Work may be reviewed in progress, upon completion through trial runs, and/or for serviceability through actual use. Positions repair and overhaul diesel engines, reduction gears, clutches, and couplings. Replaces propeller shafts and bearings and aligns to the engines. Positions repair and overhaul fire pumps, bilge pumps, hydraulic pumps, generators, starters and throttle control systems, fuel injection pumps, sand pumps, winches with air over hydraulic controls and manual remote controls, and synchronizes twin engines turning sand pump. They also may repair and rebuild gasoline engines, air-cooled and outboard motors as well as maintain records of all work performed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Working knowledge of the operating principles of diesel and gasoline engines; reduction gears; hydraulic, air and electric control systems; and vacuum and pressure pumps.
• Ability to independently determine the cause of and procedures to follow in repairing malfunctioning equipment.
• Physical strength to move heavy objects and perform manual labor for considerable periods of time.

Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three years of progressive experience in the repair of diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, hydraulic, air and electric systems, and components, preferably in the ship repair or shipbuilding industry; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
