Class Concept

Positions perform supervisory work in the maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel engines, and other marine equipment in the Ferry Division. Positions assist in the performance of skilled repairs, and supervise the work of Marine Mechanics. The work is differentiated from other supervisory levels by size and complexity of the operation. Considerable independence is exercised, subject to occasional inspection, with primary review through effective operation of repaired equipment.

Recruitment Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Considerable knowledge of the operating principles of internal combustion engines.
• Considerable knowledge of hydraulic, air, and electric control systems found on ferries, dredges, and other marine equipment.
• Ability to diagnose the cause of malfunctioning equipment.
• Ability to schedule, assign, and guide the work of those supervised.
• Ability to maintain routine clerical records.

Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three years of experience in the performance of the full range of journey-man level tasks associated with maintenance and repair of diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, hydraulic, air, and electric systems, and components, one year of which was in the ship repair or shipbuilding industry; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
