Class Concept

Positions perform supervisory work in the maintenance, repair, and rebuilding of gasoline and diesel engines, and other marine equipment in the Ferry Division. Positions may supervise and coordinate the work of Marine Mechanics, Machinists, Welders, and Electricians. Work is performed with considerable independence, in accordance with trade practices and departmental policies. Work is subject to occasional inspection, but is reviewed primarily by effective operation of repaired equipment.

Recruitment Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Considerable knowledge of the operating principles of internal combustion engines and other equipment repaired in a marine maintenance facility.
• Considerable knowledge of hydraulic, air, and electric control systems found on ferries, dredges, and other marine equipment.
• Ability to diagnose the cause of malfunctioning equipment.
• Ability to schedule, coordinate, and assign work; and to instruct and train those supervised.
• Ability to maintain routine clerical records.

Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and five years of experience in the performance of the full range of journey tasks associated with maintenance and repair of diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, hydraulic, air, and electric systems, and components, one year of which was in to ship repair or shipbuilding industry; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
