Positions perform supervisory work in the preparation, application, and maintenance of marine paint coating systems used to preserve steel ferries, dredges, barges, and work boats. Positions inspect vessels for rusted areas, determine necessary coating(s), and direct employees in surface preparation and application of the coating(s). Positions direct the blocking of vessels and inspects lifesaving equipment for compliance to U.S. Coast Guard regulations. Work involves inspection of hull, superstructure, and all coated surfaces of steel vessels to determine areas which need re-coating. Positions determine required surface preparation and type and number of paint coats. Positions direct employees in the sand washing, sandblasting, and painting of steel vessels.
Recruitment Requirements
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Working knowledge of techniques of steel surface preparation prior to application of coatings.
Working knowledge of paints and preservation used on steel and wood surfaces.
Working knowledge of U.S. Coast Guard vessel safety regulations.
Ability to estimate the amounts and kinds of supplies needed based on past records.
Ability to supervise and train subordinate painters and sandblasters.
Minimum Education and Experience
High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and five years of experience in surface preparation and painting of steel surfaces preferably in the ship repair or ship building industry; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
