Class Concept

Positions perform journey level work in the installation and maintenance of fire-fighting, bilge, hydraulic steering, sanitary, potable water, hot water heating, fuel, and exhaust piping systems on dredges and ferries. Work involves routine maintenance and installation of complete systems from blueprints. Work must meet U.S. Coast Guard standards for safety and quality. Positions perform with considerable independence in routine work. Complex or unusual assignments are discussed with a technical supervisor. Work includes inspection of existing piping systems through both visual and hydrostatic testing. Work often requires overhaul or replacement of pumps and valves.

Recruitment Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Working knowledge of U.S. Coast Guard regulations pertaining to plumbing systems.
• Working knowledge of the methods of installation and repair of piping systems.
• Working knowledge of safety precautions in the pipefitting trade.
• Ability to use tools and equipment necessary to affect repairs.
• Ability to solder, sweat, and weld pipes and joints.
• Ability to read blueprints and mechanical drawings.
• Working knowledge of the characteristics of pipes constructed of a variety of materials.

Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three years of experience in the installation and repair of a variety of piping systems similar to those aboard ferries and dredges; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
