Class Concept

Positions provide administration and technical direction of the ferry shipyard. Positions supervise the maintenance and repair program required to maintain ferries, barges, dredges, workboats and fuel barges including the hauling and dry-docking, inspection, repair, and sea trials of these vessels. Repair work includes the complete overhaul and rebuilding of diesel engines, reduction gears, pumps, hydraulic systems, air systems, safety and navigational equipment; and the manufacture of shafts, sleeves, pins and bushings in the machine shop; and the cleaning, inspection, replacing of plates and other structural members, and the general preservation of the ship's hull and superstructure.

Recruitment Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of the shipbuilding trades including methods, materials and special techniques. Considerable knowledge of U.S. Coast Guard regulations and standards associated with the repair and operation of toll vessels.
  • Ability to plan, coordinate, and supervise the work of diverse functions through intermediate supervisors.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships and to communicate with the general public and all levels of internal personnel.
  • Ability to review the work of subordinates and offer constructive criticism.

Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and five years of progressive experience in the maintenance and major repair of vessels in the 600-800 ton range, similar to those used by the Ferry Division. At least two years of the required experience must be at a supervisory level; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
