Class Concept

Positions are assigned work performing acetylene and electric arc welding on marine vessels operated by the Ferry Division. Welding is required to ensure hull maintenance and repair, and is also necessary to permanently fuse metal parts of machinery and equipment on certified vessels. Work involves examining parent metals and alloys in order to determine their strength and properties, and determining the amount of heat to be applied. Work is characterized by requirements for close tolerance welding and for welding in a variety of physical positions. All welding work performed on certified vessels requires review and approval by U.S. Coast Guard Inspectors. Quality of welding work on non-certified vessels is reviewed by the Marine Hull Supervisor.

Recruitment Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Working knowledge of the principles and methods of oxygen acetylene brazing and electric arc welding.
• Working knowledge of the heating properties of a variety of alloys and parent metals.
• Working knowledge of U.S. Coast Guard regulations pertaining to welding on steel vessels.
• Ability to weld in overhead, flat, horizontal, and vertical positions.
• Ability to work and follow oral and written directions.
• Physical strength to move relatively heavy objects.

Minimum Education and Experience

High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Necessary Special Requirements

3G welding certification.

Ability to pass a fitness for duty test post offer.
