Class Concept

Positions in this class are held responsible for assuring the continued operation of the engines and auxiliary equipment and other mechanical equipment on board the vessel through planning and implementing preventive maintenance programs and making all minor and some major repairs. Positions also participate in major overhauls while the vessel is in dock. Included is the responsibility for operation of engine room equipment during voyages. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Vessel Captain and is reviewed through analysis of equipment durability, maintenance/repair cost and the operational readiness of the boat. Work may include periodic and temporary assumption of the responsibilities of Vessel Captain.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Considerable knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and repair of marine engines, pumps, generators, heating systems, electrical systems, and other auxiliary equipment.
• Ability to plan preventive maintenance programs.
• Ability to troubleshoot and repair diesel engines and their auxiliary equipment.
• Considerable knowledge of precautions to be taken for prevention of shipboard fire and the proper maintenance and use of firefighting equipment.
• Considerable knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions relating to engine room work aboard vessels.
• Ability to work under adverse conditions such as heat, noise, cramped quarters, and inclement weather.
• Working knowledge of vessel deck operations including safe operational practices in the loading and off-loading of various bulk cultch materials and artificial reef construction materials using dump trucks, track or wheel loaders and cranes.
• Basic seamanship skills and have the ability to perform under adverse conditions
• Thorough understanding of and the ability to use Global Positioning Systems for navigation and recording material deployment sites.

Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Education Development (GED) diploma with supplemental course work in marine diesel engines and electrical repairs, and three (3) years of experience in the maintenance, overhaul, and operation of marine diesel and gasoline engines or industrial diesel engines; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Administering the Class: Related Military or Merchant Marine service of three years in the marine engineering field may be substituted for course work in marine systems.
