Community Planner III

Class Concept

Positions in this class perform advanced professional work in community planning and in the promotion of community activities with municipal officials. Positions perform the most complex community studies and develop the most complex community reports, review the work of junior Community Planners, manage the work of private consultant firms performing community planning work, and advise and assist other units at the agency level and outside agencies on community issues.

Recruitment Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of statistical and analytical techniques applied in the collection of community planning data and in the preparation of planning reports and maps.
  • Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices applied in the handling of population, natural resources, and other economic and social data used in city, industrial, and basic resource planning.
  • Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices applied in the functioning of all phases of local government.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with county and municipal officials.
  • Ability to review the work of junior community planners.

Minimum Education and Experience

Master's degree in city and regional planning from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of experience in community planning; or Bachelor's degree in engineering, political science, geography, economics, or related field from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of experience in community planning work including completion of a formal in-service training program in community planning; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
