Class Concept

Regarding the area of feed inspection, this is regulatory inspection work in the State's feed inspection program. Positions conduct inspections of medicated feed establishments for compliance with the applicable laws and regulations. Contact is maintained with manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers, and purchasers in order to explain regulations, registration, labeling, and sampling requirements. Work may include other duties as assigned.

Regarding the area of plant pest inspection, this involves inspection and regulatory work in a plant pest's eradication and/or control program. Positions oversee a survey and monitoring program for the plant pests in an assigned geographical territory. Positions plan and participate in pheromone trap monitoring, coordinate and monitor aerial and ground pesticide spraying operations, and maintain activity records for their territory. Work may include other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of state and federal requirements pertaining to the manufacture, registration, labeling, and sale of feed and pet foods and considerable knowledge of feed manufacturing processes. (Feed Inspection)
  • Ability to explain and apply state and federal laws & regulations governing commercial feed, make independent in-depth inspections of medicated feed establishment, evaluate compliance status, direct corrective measures. (Feed Inspection)
  • Ability to perform accurate mathematical calculations, prepare reports, make independent in-depth inspections of medicated feed establishment, evaluate compliance status and direct corrective measures. (Feed Inspection)
  • Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with feed manufacturers, dealers, farmers and the general public. (Feed Inspection)
  • Considerable knowledge of insects and pests and working knowledge of the principles of plant pest management. (Plant Pest Inspection)
  • Skills required to operate trucks, high clearance sprayers, mist blowers, ground and aerial pesticide applications. (Plant Pest Inspections)
  • Ability to interpret, apply and gain compliance with the laws, rules and regulations governing the program. (Plant Pest Inspection)
  • Ability to supervise and direct the work of others. As well as ability to maintain effective working relationships.(Plant Pest Inspection)

Minimum Education and Experience

Feed Inspection: High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years and six months of experience in the manufacture or sale of feed products, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Plant Pest Inspection: Associate's degree in pest management, entomology or horticulture from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of experience in plant pest management; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Requirements

Must qualify to be commissioned by the FDA to perform medicated feed mill inspections. (only for Feed Inspection)
