Structural Pest Control Inspector

Class Concept

Work in this class involves inspection and regulatory work in the State's structural pest control program. Employees inspect records, equipment, facilities and treatments conducted by licensed pest control operators, certified applicators and registered employees of licensed pest control operators and investigate alleged cases of misuse of pesticides and incidents that involve unlicensed operators performing structural pest control work. All of the duties focus on determining that work is being conducted in accordance with state and federal laws, rules, and regulations that govern structural pest control work. Employees testify before the State's Structural Pest Control Committee, prepare warrants through magistrates, and appear as witnesses in court. Work may include other duties as assigned.

Recruitment Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of structural pest control practices and procedures, equipment, concepts of pest management problems, pesticides and pesticide toxicity, safety, and disposal.
  • Considerable knowledge of general or urban and industrial entomology with general knowledge of common construction methods and materials.
  • Working knowledge of the state and federal laws and regulations pertaining to the storage, use and handling of pesticides.
  • Ability to work independently in planning, scheduling and carrying out duties.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with the structural pest control industry and other clients. Ability to communicate and to read and interpret complex pesticide labels and apply use, storage and disposal directions to specific situations.
  • Ability to perform strenuous activities including crawling in confined areas, stooping, bending, climbing, and operating large power hand tools.
  • Ability to see well with limited light.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in pest management, entomology, horticulture, biology or a closely related life science from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
