Class Concept

This is specialized work in developing, coordinating, administering and promoting aviation safety training programs. Positions perform research and development related to aviation safety and conduct active statewide aviation safety and education program directed toward pilots, mechanics and other support functions involved in the aviation field. Work includes coordinating/conducting the training and evaluation of agency pilots, developing and implementing safety seminars, designing and preparing aviation safety reports for publication, and acting as an aviation safety consultant to private pilots, airport owners and managers, and other related groups. Positions also conduct refresher courses and seminars on aviation safety, perform aerial hazard control investigations, assist in the maintenance of agency flight operations manuals and operating procedures, and perform co-piloting duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Considerable knowledge of the methods and techniques of presenting educational and informational materials; the guidelines and regulations concerning aviation and aviation safety; the Federal Aviation Administration rules and regulations concerning piloting aircraft; and in the operation of single and multi-engine aircraft.
• Skill in the piloting and navigating of assigned aircraft in IFR and VFR conditions.
• Ability to communicate and teach effectively; to establish and maintain effecting working relationships with the public and co-workers; to think clearly and methodically; to analyze aviation safety data and develop appropriate seminars and publications; and to prepare and maintain accurate flight and maintenance logs and reports.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree from an appropriately accredited institution and a minimum of 1500 hours of flight time in a closely related type of aircraft and/or type of mission, with a minimum of two years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and directly related experience.

Necessary Special Requirements

Certification as an FAA commercial or air transport pilot in airplanes and/or rotorcraft and possession of an FAA Class II Medical Certificate. May also require ratings in multi-engine (land), instrument flying, and others as assigned.
