This is professional consultative, educational and information development work with community agencies to prevent deaths and injuries in NC through the implementation of educational programs in the Fire and Rescue Division of the Department of Insurance. Positions are responsible for determining fire and life safety education needs of local fire departments and communities through the review of statistical data on injuries and deaths in the state. Positions use the statistical data to develop needed training programs and work with community groups to implement education programs. In addition, positions coordinate activities for the Governor's Highway Safety Program, Safe Kids NC, NC Fire and Life Safety Educators Association, Operation Medicine Drop, and others with local agencies. Positions implement programs for fire departments, law enforcement groups, and healthcare providers to use in their educational and promotional presentations. In the event of a natural emergency or disaster, positions serve as members of the State Emergency Response Team. Work is performed under the general direction of a Fire & Rescue Manager. Work may include other duties as assigned by management.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Working knowledge of the principles and practices of injury prevention, education, and safety.
Working knowledge of research and statistical techniques, methods, principles, and their application.
Ability to obtain, interpret and apply technical data and information related to public education.
Ability to communicate professionally and effectively in written and oral form.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with representatives of other agencies and local governments, fire departments, health departments, hospitals, and law enforcement.
Ability to develop and deploy injury prevention programs based on community need and statistical data.
Working knowledge of local, state, regional, and national injury prevention programs and their implementation processes.
Ability to travel extensively throughout North Carolina.
Minimum Education and Experience
Associates degree in Education, Fire Science or closely related field from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience in developing and presenting fire or injury prevention programs and certification as a Child Passenger Safety Instructor or Fire and Life Safety Educator; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
