Positions in this class peform inspectional work in enforcing the North Carolina State Building Code and the National Fire Prevention Association Regulations as they apply to fire safety in State owned buildings. Positions in this class conduct routine inspections of State owned structures to determine violations of standards and special inspections of especially hazardous situations as required. Positions compile reports noting violations of building and fire safety codes and recommend corrective measures. Work is performed independently with general supervision from a consulting engineer.
Recruitment Requirements
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Working knowledge of the North Carolina Building Codes and the National Fire Prevention Association Regulations.
Working knowledge of building materials and construction practices.
Ability to exercise good judgment in appraising situations and making decisions.
Ability to prepare complete and accurate reports on inspections and investigations.
Ability to establish effective working relationships with agency representatives.
Minimum Education and Experience
Associates degree in engineering, architectural technology or fire science from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of fire inspection experience; or High school or General Education Development (GED) Diploma and five years of fire inspection experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
