Class Concept

This is supervisory work in the administration and technical direction of either the Radiology Compliance Branch or the Radon and Tanning Program Branch within the Radiation Protection Section. Employees develop, establish, revise and monitor unit work standards, goals and priorities; interpret regulations and ensure that subordinate Health Physicists or Environmental Specialists apply them consistently; recruit, hire, orient, and train new employees; resolve employee grievances and investigate other employee relations issues; review the more complex license applications and inspection reports; assign work ensuring workload balance; prepare inspection guides and model reports; determine the need for personnel, space and equipment; and project, compile, and maintain a branch budget. Work also includes researching and studying new technology and methodology, accompanying employees on field inspection trips, reviewing training needs of employees and recommending training programs. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Radiation Protection Section Chief who reviews work through personal conferences, analysis of written reports and recommendations, and program results and goals achieved.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Considerable knowledge of the scientific principles and the biological effects of radiation exposure from industrial and medical uses and from environmental release or contamination.
• Considerable knowledge of and the ability to apply, the laws, rules, regulations and policies that govern or influence radiation protection.
• Working knowledge of air and other environmental sampling techniques, radiation shielding design concepts, and the use of radiation detection instrumentation.
• Working knowledge of research processes and data gathering techniques and the ability to evaluate, process and present data.
• Ability to express results of investigations and make recommendations tactfully, firmly, clearly and concisely in oral and written form and ability to make public presentations.
• Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with co-workers, the regulated community, general public, state and federal agencies.
• Ability to work in environments where ionizing radiation is present.
• Ability to work in frequently stressful environment with multiple assignments, priority deadlines and in occasional emergency response conditions.
• Ability to use computers, including common software and analytical programs.
• Ability to train, lead, and evaluate the work of other employees.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in degree in nuclear, physical, or environmental science; health/ medical physics, radiologic science from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of applicable experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
