Class Concept

Positions in this class inspect for, anticipate, recognize, evaluate and control health and safety hazards in an occupational and community setting. Health and safety hazards cover a wide range of chemical, physical, biological and ergonomic stressors. Assignments are the result of requests for assistance from industrial officials. Positions also conduct special studies of particular occupational health hazards. Positions work in a wide variety of industries with a wide variety of health hazards. Positions perform conduct site evaluations, detect hazards, evaluate severity of hazards, and recommend control measures. Positions plan and perform special studies of the more widespread or dangerous hazards.

Position evaluates and recommends control measures for unique hazards. Inspection techniques and existing control measures often not sufficient. Instructions are received only on unusual or new problems, usually upon the request of the employee. Work is often performed independent of technical supervision. Decisions could affect individual industries, their workers and/or the general public. Decisions take the form of advice to employers or responsible party's officials on control techniques for occupational health hazards. Decisions could cost industries considerable sums of money or endanger the lives of workers.

Contacts are primarily with industrial officials to explain the process involved in industrial hygiene surveys, to convince them of the severity of, hazards, and to take often costly measures to protect the health of workers. Positions must work in a variety of industries with environments ranging from good to very poor. Employees in these positions are exposed to potentially dangerous health hazards on a periodic basis.

Recruitment Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Working knowledge of introductory statistics.
• Working knowledge of organic and inorganic chemistry.
• Working knowledge of biochemistry. Basic understanding of physiology.
• Working knowledge of industrial toxicology.
• Considerable knowledge of industrial processes, potential health hazards, and control equipment and methods.
• Thorough knowledge of industrial hygiene sampling techniques.
• Ability to explain hazardous situations to industrial officials, and to convince them of potential danger to employees.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in industrial hygiene, occupational safety & health, biology, chemistry, physics, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, or a closely related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of progressive experience in industrial hygiene inspections: or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
