Class Concept
Work involves the supervision, coordination, administration, and management of Industrial Hygiene Consultants engaged in the inspection of industrial work places, detection of occupational health hazards, and advising industrial officials on control methods. Work can involve planning, directing and coordinating the work of staff in providing consultative services to organizations requesting assistance in the improvement of their safety programs or participation in the development, interpretation and communication of occupational safety and health standards and rules. Position trains, supervises and reviews the work of staff in a statewide program or a central office. Supervisor may oversee consultations provided to employers including innovative approaches to reduce the number and severity of workplace illnesses and injuries by performing cost/benefit analysis, providing model/ sample programs, and may conduct injury and illness trend analysis. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Occupational Health Director.
Position assists the Occupational Health Director in establishing yearly goals for consulting contacts. Position identifies especially hazardous occupations or industries and initiates research studies. Position determines priority of consulting visits based on apparent severity of hazards. Position adjusts workloads in absence of positions or to cover special projects. Position provides recommendations to the Occupational Health Director on travel, personnel needs, equipment needs, and supplies. Position provides on-the-job training to subordinates. Position identifies needs, informs subordinates of training seminars and courses, and requests permission for attendance. Position explains administrative standards to employees. Position participates in the establishment or revision of internal policies and procedures. Position investigates the need for new policies or procedures upon assignment and makes recommendations. Position spot checks reports for adequacy of documentation and consistency of conclusions. Position recommends new hires or promotions, merit increases, reassignments, etc., to supervisor.
Recruitment Requirements
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of industrial hygiene principles and practices.
- General understanding of introductory statistics and basic understanding of physiology.
- Working knowledge of organic and inorganic chemistry, biochemistry and industrial toxicology.
- Considerable knowledge of federal and state safety and health codes and ability to understand and interpret laws, standards, regulations applicable to specific work site situations and statistical data.
- Ability to understand a variety of equipment found throughout the construction, maritime, agriculture and manufacturing industries and ability to use sophisticated inspection testing and measuring equipment
- Thorough knowledge of the State and Federal laws, rules, regulations and safety & health standards governing North Carolina work sites.
- Extensive working knowledge of strategic planning techniques, complex data base management systems and team building.
- Ability to communicate effectively in written and oral form to explain hazardous situations to industrial officials, and to convince them of potential danger to employees.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with management, State and Federal officials, and the general public.
- Ability to train and supervise other workers.
Minimum Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree in occupational safety and health, industrial management, industrial hygiene, biology, chemistry, physics, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering or a closely related curriculum in an appropriately accredited institution and five years of progressive experience in occupational safety and health field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
