Class Concept

This is technical work engaged in the inspection and examination of a variety of equipment used in the storage, transportation, distribution, and measurement of liquefied petroleum gases to insure compliance with the law, established safety regulations, and standards of measurement. Routine work assignments, which are received in terms of the inspections to be made, are accomplished independently in accordance with departmental procedures and standards. Complex work situations, or those involving a deviation from prescribed methods and standards, are accompanied by specific instructions from a superior. Positions in this class performs duties in one of the following areas: (1) Inspect LP-Gas delivery vehicles, including the accuracy of the meters used to deliver product as well as LP-Gas dispensers that use a meter to sell product, or (2) Inspect LP-Gas bulk plant facilities, installations and residential or business location, exchange cabinets and dispensers (does not include the testing of the meter). Work requires the independent use of technical equipment to determine the extent to which various devices and mechanisms conform to established standards and specifications. Work is reviewed by a superior through the analysis of written reports for adequacy of inspections and for proper interpretation and application of pertinent regulations and specifications.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Working Knowledge of the physical nature of liquified petroleum gases, or other hazardous materials.
• Working Knowledge of the principles of construction and operation of equipment and systems for the storage, transportation, and consumption of liquified petroleum gases.
• Ability to interpret, explain, and apply the specifications and standards which govern the design, construction, installation, and operation of liquefied petroleum gas systems.
• Ability to apply technical formulas in the solution of a variety of work problems.
• Ability to work independently, and establish and maintain effective working relationships with representatives of the industry and with the public.

Minimum Education and Experience

Associate's degree in an engineering field or engineering technology from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of related experience; or completion of high school or a general educational development diploma and three years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Related experience includes the installation and maintenance of equipment used in the handling, storage, and distribution of liquids, gases, or other hazardous materials or code enforcement, such as building code.
