Class Concept

Work in this class involves the enforcement of the North Carolina Pesticide laws regulating the application, sale, disposal and registration of all pesticides and the enforcement of the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act in an assigned geographical area of the state. Positions inspect licensed chemical dealers, consumer market place sellers and pesticides producers for registration and label requirements, collect pesticides samples for laboratory analysis, investigate incidents where suspected use or misuse of pesticides have occurred, investigate storage and disposal of pesticide containers and products, and inspect pesticide application equipment. Positions may issue stop sale, stop use, or removal orders on pesticides or specified equipment found in violation of the laws and regulations. Work involves consultation with dealers, applicators, and the general public and keeping them informed of changes in rules and regulations.

Recruitment Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations pertaining to registration, sales, storage use and handling of pesticides.
  • Considerable knowledge of the pesticide industry, pesticide toxicity, safety, and disposal. Working knowledge of pesticide application equipment and techniques.
  • Ability to work independently in planning, scheduling and carrying out duties.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the regulated industry and the general public.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex pesticide labels and apply use, storage and disposal directions to specific situations.
  • Ability to understand and explain applicable laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Ability to complete required forms, records, and reports.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in chemistry, entomology, pest management, horticulture, plant pathology or a closely related biological science from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
