Railroad Safety Inspector

Class Concept
This is inspectional work in the enforcement of the Federal Railroad Administration standards concerning the safe operation of railroads. Positions in this class function as track inspectors in the enforcement of FRA Track Safety Standards or as equipment inspectors in the enforcement of FRA Railroad Freight Car Safety Standards or as a Safety Compliance Officer/Inspector for NCDOT Rail Programs. Responsibilities include the inspection of records, equipment, or track, the issuance and explanation of violation notices, the conduction of follow-up inspections, and the preparation of correspondence to FRA officials concerning violations, fines, and the failure of railroad officials to take corrective action upon notice of a violation. Duties may also include accident and complaint investigations which involve technical reviews, visual inspections, and witness interviews. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Railroad Safety Director.
Recruitment Requirements
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Working knowledge of railroad safety regulations, safety equipment, and track construction and maintenance requirements.
Working knowledge of engineering principles relating to banking and grade in laying track, drainage system, and layout.
Ability to understand and apply engineering standards related to the construction and maintenance of track and roadbeds.
Ability to communicate effectively in written and oral form.
Ability to maintain effective working relationships with railroad representatives and the public.
Minimum Education and Experience
Associate's degree in an engineering curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of experience in regulatory or engineering technician work; or.
High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and five years of experience in railroad construction or maintenance; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
