Class Concept

Work in this class involves the planning, coordinating, and supervision of a group of Standards Inspectors within approximately one-third of the state in the enforcement of the N.C. Gasoline and Oil Inspection Law and N.C. Weights and Measures Act of 1975. Positions in this class plan, coordinate, and direct staff in testing packages for correctness and consistency of measurement, in the inspection of weighing and measuring devices for proper construction and installation, in testing the devices for correctness and consistency of measurement, and in adjusting this equipment for accurate measurement. Positions advise inspectors in the more difficult of non-routine problems and make recommendations to the Measurement Section Manager as to the handling of controversial enforcement procedures. Positions conduct performance tests for prototype approval and recommend either acceptance or rejection of the device to the Measurement Section Manager. Work may include other duties as assigned.

Recruitment Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of laws, rules and regulations involved in the State's Gas and Oil and Weights and Measures Inspection programs.
  • Considerable knowledge of the principles of construction and operation of the equipment being inspected.
  • Ability to comprehend, explain and apply rules and regulations.
  • Ability to train and supervise employees.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form. Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships.

Minimum Education and Experience

Completion of high school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and four years of experience in Gas and Oil or Weights and Measures Inspection Program; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
