Class Concept

This is technical architectural work supporting architects and engineers in the design of new construction and renovation projects. Positions in this class receive floor layouts for Capital Improvements Projects, prepare design development and working drawings for submittal to Property Control, revise drawings as necessary, and prepare specifications in preparation for bidding. Positions also serve as liaison to private consulting engineers contracted to complete mechanical or electrical drawings and as the owner's representative. Work can include site visits to determine feasibility of preliminary plans comparing users' needs with structural, electrical, or mechanical system constraints. Revises preliminary plans based on these constraints. Positions may review, approve or investigates requests for payments. Work is performed independently under the general supervision of a consulting architect or engineer and is reviewed through discussions on project progress.

Recruitment Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Considerable knowledge of the North Carolina State Building Code.
• Considerable knowledge of available building materials.
• Considerable knowledge of the structural design of buildings.
• Working knowledge of the operational theory behind building mechanical and electrical systems.
• Ability to visualize building additions and renovations and to lay out floor plans including lighting, electrical outlets, windows and doors.
• Ability to design building renovations and additions, balancing user needs versus structural and engineering requirements.
• Ability to write construction specifications and compute cost estimates.
• Working knowledge of construction methods and techniques.
• Ability to negotiate with private consulting engineers and construction contractors.

Minimum Education and Experience

Associate's degree in architectural technology from an appropriately accredited institution and five years of experience in planning and design, cost estimating, and inspection of larger scale including larger construction projects or renovation projects with emphasis on building construction; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
