Class Concept

This is para-professional engineering technical support work performing a wide variety of complex and advanced assignments including analyzing, evaluating, computing, editing, recording, inspecting, and processing structure related information. Work usually involves an wide range of decision-making and use of judgment and would may include supervising and providing work direction to others. Positions may check contractors and fabricators' designs and calculations, and evaluate bridge utility additions. Other duties may include revising existing contract drawings; selecting bridge design computer programs to analyze a contractor's bridge component redesign; and drafting, revising and developing plans for contract plan revisions. Work is performed under very limited technical and fairly limited administrative supervision

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Thorough knowledge of surveying and materials, methods and equipment used in highway or building construction
• Thorough knowledge of mathematical functions, including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
• Skill in drafting
• Skill in the use of survey instruments.
• Skill in the use of office equipment such as calculators and computer terminals.
• Ability to read, interpret and explain construction plans, contract provisions, specifications and inspection procedures, and related documents/communications.
• Ability to take notes and prepare or review reports.

Minimum Education and Experience

Associate's degree in an applicable area of engineering technology from an appropriately accredited institution and six years of progressive technician experience; or High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and eight years of progressive technician experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
