This is professional administrative medical work directing a statewide health program. Employees serve as medical directors for major programs such as Mental Health, Public Health, Medical Assistance (Medicaid and Medicare). Employees develop the policy for the program and work closely with stakeholders to maximize optimal health care in the designated area of expertise. Employees may supervise medical consultants in the implementation of programs or setting statewide best practices. Work requires significant independent judgment in determining statewide responses to situations, policies or procedures. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Division Director.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Extensive knowledge of best practices in the medical field related to public health, mental health, developmental disabilities, and substance abuse.
Extensive knowledge of the theory, principles, and practices of general and preventive medicine, as related to mental and public health administration.
Extensive knowledge of developments in the field of public or mental health and ability to apply improved techniques and procedures in the specialties to which assigned.
Extensive knowledge of relevant health laws, regulations, and policies, and ability to interpret them to others.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with federal agencies and other stakeholders.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with professionals and stakeholders.
Ability to prepare and present educational materials to other professionals and community groups.
Minimum Education and Experience
Licensed to practice medicine in the state of North Carolina and two years of related experience.
