Class Concept

This is supervisory and coordinative work in the operation of an animal comparative medicine unit, a laboratory, or surgical facility or units requiring specialized care in a veterinary teaching hospital, zoological park or research facility. Employees are responsible for the work of other Veterinary Technician II positions in the preparation and performance of animal surgical procedures, research protocols, diagnostic procedures, and animal treatments. Employees supervise the operation and maintenance of laboratory facility equipment and supplies. Work requires employees to be responsible for ensuring adequate staffing; determining work flow; providing liaison between clinical, technical and/or research staff; and participating in personnel related functions including the approval of leave, training and orientation, performance appraisal, and selection of new employees. Employees may also spend a small percentage of time performing work characteristic of the Veterinary Technician II level. Employees exercise independent judgment in planning and scheduling the work, establishing procedures for assembly, sterilization, and preparation of laboratories, equipment and instruments. Work is performed under the general supervision of a veterinarian, who reviews the work through periodic conferences and analysis of results obtained.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Considerable knowledge of animal anatomy, physiology, diseases, treatments and restraint, and surgical/diagnostic procedures and techniques.
• Considerable knowledge of patient monitoring equipment and aseptic techniques.
• Thorough knowledge of the signs of common animal diseases.
• Thorough knowledge of medications and surgical instruments.
• Thorough knowledge of medications and surgical instruments.
• Ability to manage emergency situations efficiently and effectively.
• Ability to maintain detailed accurate records and files.
• Ability to help move, lift and restrain large animals.
• Ability to administer medication and injections to animals.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form.

Minimum Education and Experience

Associate's degree from an appropriately accredited institution in an American Veterinary Medical Association program with two years of related veterinary work experience; or,

High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and four years of animal care, veterinary or closely related research experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
