Extension Requests

There are two primary types of extensions: within the 11-month limit and beyond the 11-month limit.  Extensions beyond the 11-month limit require an approved exception.  For more information about exceptions to the 11-month limit, please see our Exceptions to the 11-Month Limit page.

Keep in mind that the State of North Carolina is considered one employer for the purpose of the 11-month limit. This means that any continuous time worked as a temporary employee for any combination of North Carolina state agencies counts toward the 11-month limit. The employee’s 11-month “clock” does not reset when they transfer from one North Carolina State Agency to another, only when the individual has been separated from temporary employment with the state for at least 31 consecutive calendar days.

Extensions Within the 11-Month Limit

Some temporary job assignments are less than 11 months in length.  Examples of these might include a seasonal job or a temporary providing short-term coverage while a permanent employee is on parental or medical leave.  Since a temporary employee can work up to 11 consecutive months without an approved exception, a State Agency may request to extend a short temporary assignment up to the individual’s 11-month limit due date by submitting a Temporary Solutions Extension request.

Extensions Beyond the 11-Month Limit

Retirees, full-time students, interns, externs, inmates and individuals granted an exception by the Director of OSHR are exempt from the 11-month limit and may work for more than 11 consecutive months once their exception eligibility is verified.

To request an extension beyond the employee’s 11-month limit, please submit a Temporary Solutions Extension request as early as possible prior to the employee reaching their 11-month limit considering the verification processes below.  Once it is received, Temporary Solutions works directly with the employee to verify their eligibility for an exception.
