Sen. Tom Harkin today delivered keynote remarks to open a two-hour virtual event for state employees and disability advocates to recognize Disability Employment Awareness Month and the 30th anniversary of the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA).

To celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA), Sen. Tom Harkin will take questions via Webex video chat from 11-11:20am Tuesday, Oct. 13. A tireless champion of disability rights, Harkin will address disability employment and how the public sector may model North Carolina’s efforts to be more welcoming and inclusive of individuals with disabilities in the state government workplace.

The State of North Carolina Virtual Career Expo exceeded expectations on Tuesday, with 3,121 registrants participating in a total of 31,129 chats with state agency and University System recruiters in 35 career- or agency-specific booths. Between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., recruiters averaged 450 chats with jobseekers interested in public service careers with the State of North Carolina.

The virtual format will allow attendees to connect via computer, tablet or smartphone with recruiters from state agencies and the University System.

State employees can use up to three days (24 hours) of paid time off to volunteer with their County Board of Elections to help with this fall’s elections, the Office of State Human Resources announced today. 

More than 1,600 state employees used Paid Parental Leave in the first year the benefit became available through an executive order issued by Governor Roy Cooper.

Sixteen state employees with 45 years of public service have been honored with the Richard Caswell Award.

Nine state employees were honored with Governor’s Awards for Excellence today during a ceremony in the N.C. Museum of History.
