Background

On July 30, 2021, a file containing personal information on 84,859 current or former state agency and university employees was discovered on a state intranet portal during a sweep for personally identifiable information on the network. The file had been mistakenly uploaded on May 14, 2020. That intranet portal was accessible only if employees authenticated access using the username and password that they use for work. The file contained the following data fields: name, Social Security number, employing agency, position classification, position work title, and a field which duplicated the Social Security number in certain cases. The file did not contain any other information. The file was taken down immediately upon discovery. To date, there is no evidence that the information was improperly accessed.

Individuals who have been contacted by the State of North Carolina regarding their potential exposure due to this concern are eligible for 24 months of free crediting monitoring and identify theft protection through IDX. Names of persons who register for the service will be cross-referenced with the orginal file to ensure eligibility, with non-eligible applicants denied free access. Please note that you must enroll to use this free service which became active on October 1, 2021. The deadline to enroll is January 4, 2022.
