Introduction to NCFlex Benefits

What Is NCFlex?

NCFlex is a state-sponsored benefits program that offers supplemental benefits to eligible employees. NCFlex benefits can travel with an employee to other participating NCFlex employers. These benefits give enrolled employees peace of mind and opportunities to save. NCFlex premiums come out of employees' pay on a pre-tax basis, saving an average of 30 percent.

Who Is Eligible?

If you work in a permanent, probationary or time-limited position at least 20 hours a week at a state agency, university, participating community college or participating charter school, then NCFlex benefits are available to you.

For the Disability plan you must work 30 or more hours per week. Employees of the University of North Carolina System and any constituent institution are not eligible for the Group Term Life, AD&D or Disability plans through NCFlex. Check with your HR representative for more information.

As an employee of an agency, university, participating community college, or participating charter school, you have many benefits to choose from.

For the Disability plan you must work 30 or more hours per week. Employees of the University of North Carolina System and any constituent institution are not eligible for the Group Term Life, AD&D or Disability plans through NCFlex. Check with your HR representative for more information.

New hires and newly-eligible employees have 30 days from their date of hire or eligibility date to make benefit elections. There are two ways to enroll in NCFlex benefits. Choose the option below that's right for you to enroll today.

  • Non-University Employees
    • Online
      • Go to ncflex.org and click the Enroll Now button. Click the button for your enrollment system. If your employer is not listed, select the eBenefits button or contact your HR representative for assistance. Once logged in, the enrollment system will walk you through the steps to enroll.
    • By Phone
      • Call the eligibility and enrollment call center at 1-855-859-0966, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., ET.
         
  • University Employees
    • UNC (Empyrean) Platform
      All institutions have single sign-on for online enrollment. You can link to the UNC (Empyrean) platform for your institution from the enrollment page on the UNC System Human Resources site. 
      • Log into the site.
      • Once logged in, you will see a pending event.
      • Click Continue and follow the prompts to make your enrollment choices. 
      • Scroll down through the display of your choices and click Submit My Elections
      • Be sure to click Accept on the pop-up message that appears. This is a critical step! If you don't do this, your choices will not be recorded. 
      • Print a copy of your Confirmation Statement before logging out.
    • Have questions or need assistance? Call the Empyrean University Benefits Service Center at 833-862-1490, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.-6 p.m., ET.

Carefully review the details below to ensure you don't miss your opportunity to enroll in the benefits right for you. 

  • New Hires and Newly-Eligible Employees:
    • You have 30 days from your date of hire to enroll in benefits.
    • Your benefit elections are effective on the first day of the month following your date of hire. 
    • If you do not enroll within 30 days, you will not have any NCFlex benefits for the remainder of the plan year. Your next chance to enroll will be during the next Annual Enrollment or when you experience a qualifying life event.

       

  • Current Employees During Annual Enrollment:
    • Annual Enrollment each October is your once-a-year opportunity to review and select your benefits for the coming year, add or cancel dependent coverage, and enroll in the Flexible Spending Accounts.
    • If you do not enroll during the annual enrollment period, your current elections will roll over, except for any Flexible Spending Accounts. 
      • FSAs include Health Care Flexible Spending Accounts and Dependent Day Care Flexible Spending Accounts. These must be elected each year.

         

  • Current Employees Experiencing a Qualifying Life Event:
    • You can enroll or make changes to your benefits elections during the year within 30 days of a qualifying life event. 
    • Qualifying life events include, but are not limited to:
      • Marriage
      • Divorce or legal separation
      • Birth or adoption (or placement of adoption) of a child
      • Death of a covered dependent
      • Change in your spouse's employment impacting their benefits eligibility
      • Your dependent turns age 26
    • Changes in coverage due to life events must be consistent with your status change.
